Cutting PVC Pipe in a Tough or Hard to Reach Spot

So, you need to cut PVC pipe, but you can’t get a saw in the tiny gaps of space around the piping. You might be shocked to find that you can make the cut with a nylon string. Other materials such as cotton will not work. The makeup of the nylon string works best with friction to cut through PVC.

Nylon String Cutting Method

1. Find the place on the PVC pipe where you need to make your cut.
   2. Use the utility knife to make a few marks around the pipe where you will place the nylon string. The goal here is to create a groove in the pipe where the nylon string will be placed to cut through the PVC.
   3. Wrap the string around half of the pipe opposite of where you are. You’ll hold one end of the string in your left hand and the other end in your right.
   4. Pull lightly on the string to make sure it’s in the groove you created. Pull back and forth with your left and right hands. This will create a sawing effect and will cut through the PVC pipe.

Why Not Use a Cable Saw?

A cable saw may not be long enough to get the friction you need to make the cut. With nylon, you can give yourself plenty of space.

Additionally, if you’re cutting near freshly painted walls or newly renovated floors, you may saw too close and cause damage you’d rather avoid.

Some cable saws are known to not hold up for long and could cause injury if they break while in use. Nylon is inexpensive, so the cost to replace it over time is much more affordable long term.

Add it to the Toolbox

By this point, if you haven’t already purchased nylon string, order some now and add it to your toolbox. You never know when you’re going to need it when working with PVC. It may save you time and several unnecessary trips to the hardware store. It's also extremely affordable compared to other types of saws.

Note, using Nylon string to cut pvc pipe is a great alternative, but sometimes it doesn't replace the need for professional tools. It all depends on the specific situation.
